NM – 68.9 miles – Columbus Marina to Oxbow Anchorage MM 356

Total Miles: 225.6

LOCKS Today- 3

Total Locks – 10
Stennis Lock & Dam, Bevill Lock & Dam, and Heflin Lock & Dam

Left early Tuesday morning to be at the lock at first light.  We were told the rivers were flooding and the locks were still operating.  We got to the lock before 7:00 am and noticed right away all the debris that was cluttering the waterway. Logs, Hyacinth floating everywhere and trash.

John C Stennis – U.S. Senator from Mississippi, considered to be one of Mississippi’s greatest leaders, Tom Bevill – Alamaba Congressman and chairman of the congressional committee in the U.S. House of Representatives that approved funding of the Tenn-Tom’s construction and Howard Heflin – U.S. Senator from Alabama.  We dropped a total of 90 feet today.

Sample of some of the logs that were floating.  The current was about 2.5 mph so when we normally would travel at 9. to 9.5 mph today we were running 11.2 – 12.2 mph.  We had to keep our eyes open all day to watch out for debris that we did not need to run over.

Cloudy cool day with peeks of sunshine                                  Telephone booth along the River
I remember our trip up the river about 6 -7 years ago and seeing this phone booth. I was surprised to see it again on this trip. The trip ended just below the Helflin Lock and Dam on a cutoff from the main river.  The current was so swift but we were able to get a good hold with our anchor and plan to stay the night.  We will head out in the morning for Demopolis Marina about 50 miles downstream.
